Hi there

My name is Emily and this is my dedicated space for documenting my journey with creative living. It is my hope, that I can inspire those of you who visit, read and look through this space to find the curiosity to follow your own inner voice, seek out and do the thing that makes you go “this is what life’s all about.”

"Angelien", a medieval style angel

"Angelien", a medieval style angel

If you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen the past three weeks I have been working on a very intricate painting! This painting was inspired by an altarpiece of Mary Magdalene by Carlo Crivelli (1480, tempera on panel) I saw at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

I simply adore medieval art and really enjoy the detail and style of the late medieval era. There is something about the poise of the subject, and the opulence of the intricate gilding that really draws me in. When I started this painting, I knew I wanted to emulate something similar to the Mary Magdalene altarpiece, but with my own style infused into it.

I drew inspiration from the composition and the gold framing, but decided to turn my painting into an angel (a favourite subject matter of mine) and not be too worried about trying to replicate the original.

I've been travelling a lot for work recently, and finding time to work on this has been difficult and at times, I genuinely thought I would never finish it! This is by far the most intricate painting I've done before, and quite large at 8x16 inches. However, I am very proud of myself for pushing forward and sticking to it. Three weeks is a very, very long time for me to work on a painting as I tend to want to work on several projects at once.

There were many stages to creating this piece, and the gold was several layers including an individual "blob" of paint for each raised dot you see, which is especially tricky when you're very tired and not sure what timezone you're in any more! I've included work in progress shots and some close up details, as well as the original inspiration.

I'd love to hear what you think, and if you are also a fan of medieval artwork if you have any recommendations of artists or pieces so do leave a comment below :-)
